The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has expressed grave concern over the escalation of violence against children in Burma following a military coup, a UNICEF spokesman said on Monday.
At least 114 children between the ages of three and 17 have been killed in a coup d’état in Burma since the February 1 military coup. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said at a news conference in New York that 18 children had died in January alone.
Burma must adhere to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Burma is a signatory to. UNICEF says children need to abide by the Myanmar Child Law enacted in 2019.
