Disabled Rohingya refugees faced difficulties

A study shows last year revealed 12 percent of the nearly one million Rohingya refugees living in camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, are disabled. Disabled people are having difficulty in accessing in the camps and the services provided to refugees are also lacking.

This is the first analysis collected by the Swiss-based REACH team in the Rohingya refugee camp in 2021. Disability assistants also think this number is possible. Disabled people of all ages were also among those who fled the violence in Rakhine State of Myanmar in 2017, Rohingya refugee Farida said.

“They were brought up the hard way. My husband had to ask others for help to carry him along the way. I’m still paying my debts too.”

U Maung Maung, a Rohingya refugee said there are people who helped the disabled arrived in the year 2017.

“There are people who can’t get out of bed. There are people who just can’t walk. There are still people who are blind. The NGOs are helping them. But can’t get enough medical care,” said Farida.

“Her dad told me not to use the wheelchair. His foot steps are not good anymore. He fell down yesterday.”

Helpers are being trained including ways to interact with people with disabilities and not to be shamed, Frida told more.

“It just keeps getting better and better. Working out every day is benefical.”

United Nations Office for Refugees UNHCR and partner organizations especially Handicap International – Humanity & Inclusion – HI team with rehabilitation, support equipment to enable people with disabilities to move on their own. We are providing various services. Maria Carolina Rubio is a senior project manager of the Humanity & Inclusion Aid Group at Coz’s Bazaar.

“Disability is underrated and still need help the most. There are very few organizations that do for people with disabilities. Thank you to UNHCR. Really putting the people who need it the most. Funding cuts will hurt people with disabilities.”

High hills and muddy roads make it difficult for disabled and elderly people to get access to services, Mohammed, who is a disabled person said, it takes a lot of time to get from one place to another.

“It took me an hour to get here. I’m just helping people get the word out about where the classrooms and hospitals are located. Unless they know the address. I will help others when I return to Myanmar.”

The first assessment carried out by the Switzerland-based REACH team in 2017 at Rohingya refugee camps is the transfer of people with disabilities in Rohingya refugee camp, relocation to camps, and housing. It is stated that there are difficulties in accessing and bathing alone, and also difficulties in accessing services in refugee camps.
