The military council still restricts the transportation of food to the Ann, Dalek Chaung area

The military council forces continue to restrict the transportation of food and fuel, including rice, to the Dalet Chaung area villages where more than 10,000 people live in Ann Township, are facing food shortages due to high prices.

After the ceasefire between the two sides in Rakhine, the Military Council reopened some roads, including the An-Dalet Chaung Waterway which was closed before, but the transportation of food and medicine was still restricted. As this restriction, the prices of food in the villages in Dalet Chaung, where there is no land for rice cultivation, have increased exponentially.

Residents said that a bag of rice cost only 40,000 kyat before, now costs more than 60,000 kyat, and a liter of gasoline cost only 2,700 kyat in Ann township is now sold at around 3,500 kyat in the villages of Dalet Chaug.

“Only said the road was open, but, not allowing to take rice, gasoline, construction materials and cement to build houses or anything to the village. Can talk at the gates more,” a local resident of Dalet Chaung told.

Due to the military council’s restrictions, the residents of Dalek Chaung are facing food shortage problems, and some villages are become to be almost in a state of food shortage.

“Fisherman can’t even keep up with the cost of gasoline. It’s very difficult to survive because the price of fish and gasoline is not covered. A kilogram of fish sells for 5,000 or 6,000, but to pay more than 3,000 for a bottle of gasoline, and it’s not convenient,” said another resident of Dalet Chaung who is a fisherman.

The local people who live in Dalet Chaung survive by fishing, collective the vegitable, cutting wood, and cutting firewood. Since there is no land to grow rice, there is no surplus of rice in the villages, so they have to buy it from the city and consume it.

“The road seems to be always closed. It frequently closes and opens, and never free to carry foods into village. The people who barely have enough to eat are the ones whose families don’t starve. It’s a lot of difficulties,” said a resident of Dalet Chaung.

During the fighting in 2019 and 2020, the army limited the ability to bring food into the Dalet Chaung, and thousands of local residents faced a food crisis.

Former members of parliament and local residents said that in some villages, there was no rice at all and they faced famine.

Locals also said that the transportation of food, medicine, gasoline, and building materials is restricted, and the timber and firewood produced from Dalet Chaung are not easily accessible and are restricted by the Military Council.

On the way from Ann township to the villages in Dalet Chaung, the army has opened 4 checkpoints, and from these checkpoints traffic, locals said that they are restricting and prohibiting the transportation of food.

There are 42 villages in Ann Township’s Dalet Chaung, with more than ten thousand people living there.

When the army was fighting in Rakhine State in the past, there were times when the communication routes that the people depended for goods transportation and health were cut off and blocked.

The Military Council Army and the Rakhine Army (AA) have been in a ceasefire since last November 26.

But the military council is equipped with warships, military vehicles and weapons. Residents who witnessed the food supply continue to work every day.
