1,000 Rohingya to receive skills training under China-backed program in Cox’s Bazar

A skills development program for 1,000 Rohingya refugees has been launched in Camp 11 in Ukhiya, aiming to expand practical skills, employability and livelihood opportunities for community members living in prolonged displacement.

The program, titled Sustainable Opportunities for Livelihoods, Advancement and Resilience (SOLAR), was inaugurated at the Multipurpose Building in Rohingya Camp 11 with support from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Bangladesh.

The initiative is being implemented by the national humanitarian and development organization Impact Initiative.

325 participants to receive technical training

Under the SOLAR program, 325 participants will receive practical, market-oriented technical training in several trades.

The training areas include tailoring and dressmaking, block printing and batik, mobile phone servicing, gas burner repair, and climate-smart agriculture.

Organizers said the technical training is intended to help participants develop practical abilities that could support future livelihood opportunities.

675 participants to receive soft-skills training

A further 675 Rohingya participants will receive soft-skills training.

The sessions will focus on communication, teamwork, problem-solving, workplace behavior and other life and employability skills considered important for personal and professional development.

Together, the technical and soft-skills components will cover 1,000 participants in the camp.

Camp official highlights self-reliance

Md Shariful Islam, deputy secretary and Camp-in-Charge of Camp 11, attended the inauguration as chief guest.

Speaking at the event, he said skills development and practical livelihood training could play an important role in strengthening the capacity and self-reliance of the Rohingya community.

“Initiatives such as SOLAR will help participants develop practical skills and prepare themselves for future livelihood opportunities,” he said.

Impact Initiative says program aims to strengthen resilience

The event was chaired by Md Enayet Hossain, chief executive officer of Impact Initiative.

Hossain said the organization was working to create opportunities for Rohingya community members to develop practical and market-relevant skills with support from the Chinese Embassy.

“Through the SOLAR initiative, we aim to strengthen their capacity, resilience and prospects for sustainable livelihoods,” he said.

Livelihood support amid prolonged displacement

The program is intended to complement humanitarian assistance with skills development and livelihood-focused support.

Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar remain heavily dependent on humanitarian assistance, while restrictions and prolonged displacement have limited access to sustainable livelihood opportunities.

The SOLAR initiative is expected to provide participants with practical skills that could strengthen self-reliance and resilience while they remain in the refugee camps.

With financial support from the Chinese Embassy and implementation by Impact Initiative, organizers said the program is expected to expand livelihood and skills-development opportunities for Rohingya community members in Camp 11.
