Rohingya Gen-Z movement brings 76 community groups together in Cox’s Bazar

The Rohingya Gen-Z Movement has brought together representatives of 76 Rohingya community-based organizations in Cox’s Bazar in an alliance-building initiative aimed at strengthening cooperation, accountability and collective action across the refugee community.

The movement said in a statement issued on October 17 that it held a coordination meeting with representatives of Rohingya community-based organizations, or CBOs, on October 16.

According to the statement, the initiative seeks to build stronger communication and mutual support among organizations working in the Rohingya refugee camps while ensuring that participating groups retain their own identities, responsibilities, priorities and independence.

Movement leaders described the gathering as an initial step toward longer-term cooperation rather than a one-time meeting.

76 Rohingya organizations join initiative

The Rohingya Gen-Z Movement said participation by 76 organizations demonstrated a shared willingness among community groups to cooperate on issues affecting the Rohingya people.

Rather than creating a structure that replaces or controls individual organizations, the proposed alliance is intended to provide a platform through which groups can communicate, identify common priorities and coordinate responses to challenges that may be difficult for individual organizations to address alone.

The initiative is also intended to include youth groups, women-led organizations and other community-based movements to ensure that different sections of Rohingya society have opportunities to participate in collective discussions.

Organizers said each participating organization would maintain its own identity and areas of responsibility while cooperating on matters of common concern.

Movement calls for focus on tangible results

A central theme of the initiative is a call for Rohingya organizations to focus more closely on measurable community impact rather than activities alone.

The Rohingya Gen-Z Movement said community work should go beyond holding events, conducting training sessions or implementing isolated projects.

Instead, it called for initiatives that produce tangible results, respond to actual community needs, protect human dignity and rights, strengthen community capacity and contribute to the long-term future of the Rohingya people.

Under the initiative, participating organizations would also seek to examine the effectiveness of existing community programmes, identify gaps and weaknesses and assess challenges facing refugees in the camps.

The movement said such assessments could help organizations develop responses more closely aligned with the needs of the community.

Accountability and transparency highlighted

Accountability, transparency and mutual respect were also identified as central principles of the proposed cooperation.

The Rohingya Gen-Z Movement said the alliance-building process was not intended to diminish the role of existing organizations or disregard work already carried out by community groups.

Instead, it said the initiative seeks to encourage constructive dialogue, mutual learning, transparency and accountability while strengthening participating organizations’ commitment to community service.

Organizations would be encouraged to share experiences and identify common priorities, according to the statement.

The movement said collective approaches could be particularly useful for addressing issues that are beyond the capacity or mandate of any single organization.

Youth and women included in collective decision-making

The initiative also places emphasis on participation by Rohingya youth and women.

The Rohingya Gen-Z Movement said the future of the community could not depend on a single organization, leader or individual but required participation from CBOs, young people, women and other community representatives.

Rohingya-led organizations have increasingly sought greater participation in discussions affecting refugee communities in Cox’s Bazar, including questions related to education, protection, rights, livelihoods and the community’s long-term future.

The movement said bringing diverse community voices into a common platform could help strengthen coordination without removing the independence of individual organizations.

Alliance intended to continue beyond first meeting

Organizers said the October 16 gathering should serve as the beginning of sustained cooperation rather than remain an isolated event.

The participation of 76 organizations was described by the movement as an encouraging start, with organizers expressing hope that the initiative would develop through continued engagement and practical action.

In its statement, the Rohingya Gen-Z Movement called for a transition from individual efforts to collective action, from activities to tangible results and from shared concerns to collective responsibility.

Under the slogan “Stronger Together. Moving Forward Together,” the movement said greater cooperation should be grounded in the needs, rights and future aspirations of the Rohingya community.

How the alliance will be structured, how decisions will be made and what joint initiatives will emerge from the process were not detailed in the October 17 statement.

The effectiveness of the initiative will therefore depend on how participating organizations translate the initial agreement to cooperate into sustained coordination and practical outcomes for Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar.
