Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained a 20-year-old Myanmar national carrying a rifle and ammunition near the Bangladesh-Myanmar border in Naikhongchhari upazila of Bandarban on February 4, according to reports citing border security sources.
The detainee was identified as Khin Maung Cho, also rendered in some reporting as Khine Maung Cho, a Rakhine man from Myanmar’s Maungdaw area.
The detention came amid heightened security concerns along Bangladesh’s southeastern frontier as conflict and instability continue across the border in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.
BGB patrol intercepts man at Baishfari border
According to reports, BGB personnel encountered the young man while patrolling the Baishfari border area under Naikhongchhari upazila.
Security personnel detained him after noticing suspicious activity and subsequently recovered a firearm, ammunition and military-related equipment from his possession.
One report citing security sources described the weapon as an assault rifle, while another identified it more specifically as an SLR rifle. Reporting on the seizure said approximately 180 rounds of ammunition, including three magazines or cartridges, and military-related equipment were recovered.
The differing descriptions of the seized weapon and equipment could not immediately be independently reconciled by KPN.
Questions over alleged Arakan Army affiliation
Initial reporting described the detainee as being associated with the Arakan Army (AA), which controls large areas across the border in Rakhine State. However, the sources reviewed by KPN did not provide sufficient independently verifiable evidence establishing his current membership in the armed group.
For that reason, KPN is describing him as a Myanmar national reportedly linked to the AA rather than independently confirming him as an active AA member.
The incident should also be distinguished from a separate August 2025 case in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, when BGB detained Jiban Tonchongya, 21, who identified himself to BGB as an Arakan Army member and crossed the border carrying an AK-47 rifle, 52 rounds and two magazines.
Border security tightened amid Rakhine conflict
Naikhongchhari, in Bangladesh’s Bandarban district, lies directly along the frontier with Myanmar’s Rakhine State and has faced increased security attention as fighting across the border has periodically affected communities on the Bangladeshi side.
BGB has maintained patrols and surveillance along the frontier amid concerns over unauthorized crossings, armed individuals and cross-border trafficking.
Later in February, BGB detained three other men attempting to enter Bangladesh through the Amtali border area of Ghumdhum in Naikhongchhari. Police said those detainees identified themselves during preliminary questioning as members of the Arakan Army.
Authorities said security was tightened and patrols increased following those crossings.
The border region has remained sensitive as the conflict in neighboring Rakhine State creates continuing security and humanitarian challenges for Bangladesh.
