Among those who campaigned for the bill were Burmese nationals in the United States. One is James Shwe from California.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already done a lot of sanctions.” Now, if the Act contains sanctions, it will not be easily lifted by the next president. An important aspect of this law is accountability. To investigate and report on human rights abuses by the military; So I think humanitarian assistance is the most beneficial thing under this law. Because it costs a lot of money. A global arm embargo. They also refused to accept people appointed by the military. To deny the legitimacy of the military.”

Another is Zo Thon Hmun, a Chin leader from Maryland.

“The approval of the BURMA Act of 2022 by the lower house is a great achievement for our democracy and human rights and the overthrow of the military dictatorship. It also allowed us to contribute more than $ 220 million to our civil society. “The passage of this law in this context shows how much Washington (the US government) cares about us in Burma.”

Farmer Zaw Yan said it was important for organizations that receive the permits under the law not to misuse them.

“Now we have more than $ 470 million, which is unprecedented amount of money from any government,” he said. What a joy for the spring revolution we are struggling with now. That is why organizations that allow consumers to use this money need to use it carefully and effectively.”
James Shwe says it remains to be seen how successful the United Nations, which is under the law, will be in putting pressure on the United States to take more practical steps to restore democracy in Burma. The military council has not yet commented on the Burma Act of 2022, which was approved by the lower house.
