More than 100 Rohingya refugees arrive on Indonesian coast

More than 100 Rohingya refugees from Burma arrived by boat on the Indonesian coast of Aceh early Sunday, according to an NGO there.

The NGO told reporters that 114 refugees, including 35 children, were in need of medical assistance, although it was not known how long they had been at sea.

These refugees are walking around the village asking for help. They ask for protection. I think it is the government’s responsibility for this.

A local villager said the acceptance was humanitarian.

A local official said, The villagers have provided food for the refugees. “But they are not expected to stay in this village for long.”

Last December, more than 100 Rohingya refugees were rescued by the Indonesian navy and repatriated with initial assistance, but were later relegated due to international pressure.

Indonesia is not a signatory to the 1951 UN Refugee Convention, so it is only an intermediary country for refugees to travel to third countries.

In the camp, people had no income or no job, when they faced to solemnize a marriage program in their home for their daughter, need at least 100,000 Taka in the camp, paying no dowry, only for clothing and other necessary for bride and bridegroom. It is not Burma, everything can manage but in Bangladesh for us, we need to pay for everything which is expensive, said Menara, the founder, the education wisdom development for Rohingya women.

“After 18 years old girls, they have no school, no job, no lively hood activity. Most of the family in the camp have two to three daughters sitting in their home. But the refugee camp people are not able for wedding as they have no money. If anyone propose through phone call, they quickly agree to send their daughters for marriage. It is first point; they take risky journey – the boat people system.”

When we are informed that the repatriation will be take time, all the people in the camp become tormentor. The female feels, not safe for them whatever UN provide and most of female become overage. The female wants to leave the camp for feeling no future in the camp. That is the Second point.

I meet so many families and talk about going to Malaysia by boat. They explain that their daughters become overage and feeling the host community may attack like 2017 Arakan troubles and it will be another misfortune for us.

To stop this risky journey- boat people system, Menara said the Bangladesh government must stop entering host community into camp and UNHCR must give us the rights which are allowed to us- education, job, freedom of speech, sharing power and listening the voice of female.

Another Rohingya youth, who work for Rohingya, activities and teacher in the camp – Habib, said the people who arrived at Indonesia is normal, another group will be start soon, same as another group. You can’t stop it as the camp people feeling that there is no future and willing to search new places where the better future will be found. To stop this trafficking system, the Camp in Charge must order to Majee-Block leader- to open their eyes and ears for getting information in his block. If one family is trying to go to
Malaysia, he must inform to CIC about the family. CIC can give the warning to them, not to go to Malaysia, if so, they will be jailed.

Only this way to stop trafficking system, restrict to enter outsider into camp.
