According to Justice For Myanmar, Singapore plays a key role in foreign exchange flows for the Burmese military.
Justice For Myanmar on February 7 demanded that Singapore allow the use of prominent arms brokers in its country to support the atrocities of the Burmese military and that Singapore must stop playing a key role in purchasing arms from the Burmese military.
According to leaked documents and shipping records, the International Gateways Group of Companies Limited (IGG), Justice For Myanmar has uncovered evidence of involvement of Myanmar Consultancy Company Limited and Myanmar New Era Trading Company.
According to a leaked document, IGG subsidiary Gateways Hongkong Company Limited was awarded at least 12 contracts to supply aircraft equipment to the Myanmar Air Force during the 2015-2016 fiscal year.
Another leaked report from the Ministry of Defense states that the company had made five acquisitions of parts and weapons for warships worth more than $ 3.7 million between 2016 and 2017.
The investigation identified 18 people as directors and shareholders of major military-linked companies involved in arms procurement, four of whom were family members.
All of these individuals have set up subsidiaries in Singapore and are regular arms brokers using Singapore to facilitate payments between the Burmese military and international arms dealers.
Among them, Dr Naing Htut Aung is a key figure in Burma’s arms trade. Myanmar Air Force, especially suppliers from China. As an intermediary between the Burmese navy and the military, he has been linked to top military leaders, including war criminal Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.
According to a statement issued by the National Unity Government (NUG) Ministry of Commerce on January 25, Dr Naing Htut Aung and IGG have been added to the list of arms brokers for the military.
According to Justice For Myanmar, another well-known company, Myanmar Consultancy Company Limited, has been importing parts for the Burmese military since the coup attempt, according to records from Import Genius, an export data aggregator.
“Governments around the world to urgently impose sanctions on companies and individuals involved in providing weapons to the Burmese military and continuing to attack the Burmese people. Therefore, a global ban on arms sales must be put in place immediately to stop the flow of weapons to the Security Council.”
Yadanar Maung, Justice For Myanmar
“Justice For Myanmar urges governments around the world to urgently impose sanctions on companies and individuals involved in providing weapons to the Burmese military and continuing to attack the Burmese people,” he said. “Therefore, a global ban on arms sales must be put in place immediately to stop the flow of weapons to the Security Council,” said Yadanar Maung of Justice For Myanmar.
Similarly, an expatriate economist says it would only be effective if the UN was involved in overseeing interim payments for Singapore through the Terrorist Council.
“They are making payments through Singapore,” he said. So the attitude of the Singapore government is that if they impose sanctions on the UN, it will close them. There is no way the West, including the United States, will shut down. But one thing is that US sanctions are called secondary sanctions. “If we can do everything related to that secondary sanction, it will be stricter,” he told the DVB.
Last year, Reuters reported that former Air Force Commander-in-Chief Gen. Maung Maung Kyaw and his family were selfishly involved in the purchase of military aircraft and spare parts for the military.
The nieces and nephews of General Maung Maung Kyaw, based in Singapore, provide advice and guidance in Myanmar’s aviation sector. Buying aircraft parts; He says he runs a family business that provides services related to aircraft rental and maintenance.
