Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhon, the Special Representative of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on Burma, will pay a four-day visit to Myanmar.
The visit is scheduled for the 20th to 23rd of this month, VNA Vietnam reported on Wednesday.
In the second week of March, I went to Burma to meet with relevant groups. Cambodia’s foreign minister said on February 1 that he would step up humanitarian assistance.
The exact date of departure was announced yesterday. His visit to Burma is to implement the five points agreed upon by ASEAN countries.
“Called on Asean special envoys to meet not only with the military council but also with representatives of the National Unity Government (NUG) during their visit to Burma.”
Some Asean countries
Some Asean countries have called on Asean special envoys to meet not only with the military council but also with representatives of the National Unity Government (NUG) during their visit to Burma.
The Burmese military council has been protesting since last month that meeting with designated terrorists is against Asean principles.
The National Council for National Unity (NUG) has designated the military council as a terrorist group.
NUG Foreign Minister Daw Zin Mar Aung told RFA that the meeting with all stakeholders is part of ASEAN’s five common agreements and will meet with NUG government representatives.
During Brunei’s previous chairmanship of Asean before Cambodia, Brunei’s visit to Burma was canceled when Asean special envoy Erywon Yusof was not allowed to meet with all political stakeholders, including Aung San Suu Kyi.
During his visit to Cambodia, the ASEAN Special Envoy to ASEAN met with all political stakeholders, not just the military council. It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.
