The Gambia is set to file a final motion in the International Criminal Court (ICJ) on charges of genocide against Rohingya Muslims in Burma today.
The second hearing, which runs from February 21 to 28 today, is pending before the ICJ. The Gambia and Burma have been at loggerheads over the allegations. The Gambia has denied the allegations.
Today, the Gambia will present its final statement on the Myanmar side filed on February 25. The Gambia, on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), has ruled that the case should not be accepted by the Burmese side of the court. The Gambia has denied any wrongdoing as a signatory to the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.

Since 2019, Burma has been protesting against the Gambian allegations of genocide of the Rohingya in Burma by State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi.
At the second hearing, representatives of the military council continued to present their case based on Suu Kyi’s motion.
The NUG, which emerged after the coup, announced before the second round of hearings that it had withdrawn all objections to the ICJ’s ruling from the NLD government.
The NUG government urged the ICJ to contact only a team led by Burmese Ambassador to the United Nations Kyaw Moe Tun in connection with the case, but the ICJ accepted only representatives of the military council.
