The world is not fulfilling its responsibility towards Myanmar – The UN Special Representative for Human Rights

At the 77th session of the General Assembly held yesterday at the United Nations Headquarters on October 26, Mr. Tom Andrews, the United Nations Special Representative for Human Rights in Myanmar, submitted a report on the situation in Myanmar. He reported that 13 people, including children, were killed in an attack on a school by the military council in Sagaing, and 60 concert goers were killed in an airstrike by the military council in Kachin State. That the situation in Myanmar is getting worse and worse.

Right now, war crimes and crimes against humanity are becoming a characteristic of Burmese military leaders, and at the same time, human rights watchers, activists, Journalists and civil society organizations are also hailed as Myanmar’s heroes for documenting human rights violations and providing humanitarian assistance.

Then U Kyaw Moe Tun, the UN Ambassador to Myanmar, said that he supports Mr. Tom Andrew’s report because it reflects the true situation on the ground.

Burmese Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun asked the Security Council to make a decision to ban arms sales on a global scale, and all UN member countries held an emergency meeting on Myanmar’s affairs, arms, money, the council of war. He also urged them to discuss how to concentrate and work together to prevent official incidents.

After that, at the press conference of Mr. Tom Andrews, the special representative for human rights, he pointed out the worsening human rights violations in Myanmar and it is difficult for the people of Myanmar to understand that the international response to these situations has not changed.

“In order to change the actions of the military council, the international response needs to change. It is difficult for the Burmese people to understand why there has been no change.”

Mr. Tom Andrews said that Malaysia should not be sent back to Myanmar who are currently fleeing Myanmar.

“Anyone who had to flee Myanmar to avoid death should not be sent back to danger. But now it is being sent back. I would like to focus on Malaysia, which sent at least 100 Myanmar nationals back to Myanmar. Among those repatriated are military personnel who deserted the army and ran away. In my opinion, these ex-army men will be tortured and executed after being repatriated. Such actions are appalling and unacceptable in any way and are a gross violation of human rights.”

In addition, the coup military council in Myanmar is trying to hold a fake election that is not free and fair, and the international community is urged not to make the situation worse by accepting and recognizing this election.

“India’s foreign minister recently visited Myanmar and said that India, as the largest democracy in the world, will provide assistance and advice for the elections. Internationally, it is important to legitimize the unacceptable fake election that will be held by the military council next year and not make the situation worse.”

Mr. Tom Andrews presented the 7 steps that the world countries will need to work together for the Myanmar issue at the United Nations General Assembly, and pointed out that these steps could be taken quickly and unanimously for Ukraine, but it was delayed for Myanmar.

“The situation of the people of Myanmar is very similar to that of the people of Ukraine. In this, the weapons used to kill the people of Ukraine are also being used to kill the people of Burma. The source of these weapons is the same, the Russia. What I want to say is that if it can be done for the people of Ukraine, why can’t it be done for the people of Burma? What we need is leadership. What about the United Nations? Internationally, there is no leadership to form a multi-national coalition and take the lead for Myanmar affairs. “
