Dhaka asks UN to prepare roadmap for Rohingya repatriation

Disaster Management and Relief Adviser Faruk E Azam on Sunday urged the United Nations (UN) to prepare a roadmap for the safe and sustainable repatriation of the forcibly displaced Myanmar citizens to their motherland.

“We want the UN to prepare an explicit roadmap for safe and sustainable repatriation of the Myanmar citizens who took shelter in Bangladesh being displaced from Rakhine State in Myanmar”, the adviser said when UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Myanmar Julie Bishop called on him at his secretariat office.

The adviser said: “We have given shelter to the Rohingyas on humanitarian grounds… but the solution to the problem lies in their safe and sustainable repatriation to Myanmar.”

He mentioned that their long stay in Cox’s Bazar poses a negative impact on the area.

“If the repatriation begins soon then it will not only deteriorate the overall situation of this area but also create unrest outside that area,” Faruk added.

During the meeting, they also discussed various aspects of the displaced Rohingyas.

Informing the UN’s special envoy about the Bhasan Char project, Faruk said there is a scope to engage these Rohingyas in economic activities.

The adviser also explained the issue with due importance as the UN provides humanitarian assistance in Bhasan Char.

Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Mohammad Mizanur Rahman explained the security issues of the Rohingya camps at the meeting.

During the meeting, the UN special envoy also informed the adviser that communication and discussion are underway with all the internal and external participants of Myanmar along with UN member states for beginning the repatriation process soon and preparing a favourable environment for repatriating the Rohingyas to Myanmar.
