Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Friday urged the UN Human Rights Council to adopt a strategy on Burma, including an arms embargo and more effective sanctions, to end the coup d’état in Burma.
The call comes as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights’ report on Burma is due to be debated at the Human Rights Council next Monday.
“All UN member states to impose tougher and more targeted sanctions on arms exports to Burma and military interests. HRW also advises the Security Council to refer Burma to the International Criminal Court.”
The resolution of the Myanmar Human Rights Council
The resolution of the Myanmar Human Rights Council calls on all UN member states to impose tougher and more targeted sanctions on arms exports to Burma and military interests. HRW also advises the Security Council to refer Burma to the International Criminal Court.
Lucy Mckernan, Deputy Director-General of the Human Rights Watch (HRW), said the UN Human Rights Council should respond quickly to the humanitarian crisis and human rights abuses in Burma.
In recent weeks, the Burmese military has said that airstrikes and heavy artillery attacks on civilians have resulted in an increase in civilian casualties and the loss of property.
Western sanctions imposed on Burma on February 1 last year following the military coup on February 1 last year have not been enough. Foreign human rights groups and activists are speaking out.
