Malaysian police investigate Molotov cocktail attack on Rohingya settlement in Johor

Malaysian police have opened two investigation papers after a Molotov cocktail was thrown at a Rohingya settlement in Kulai, Johor, causing a minor fire at a house but leaving no one injured, according to Johor police.

Johor police chief Ab Rahaman Arsad said authorities received reports of a fire at the settlement at about 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

The fence of a house belonging to Rohingya residents caught fire following the incident, but the flames were successfully extinguished, he said.

No injuries or other property damage were reported.

Police investigate possible link to online videos

Police said they were investigating whether the attack may have been carried out in retaliation over videos containing what authorities described as racial elements.

However, police have not established a motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.

According to Ab Rahaman, a Rohingya man in his 30s filed a police report denying that he was involved in two videos under investigation.

The man told police that his image had been used by other people to create the videos, Ab Rahaman said.

Authorities have opened two investigation papers in connection with the incident.

Molotov cocktail attack investigated under multiple laws

Police are investigating the case under several provisions of Malaysian law, including Section 436 of the Penal Code and Sections 505(b) and 505(c) of the Penal Code.

The investigation also involves Section 233 of Malaysia’s Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, according to the Johor police chief.

Authorities have not announced any arrests in connection with the Molotov cocktail attack.

Police urge public to avoid speculation

Ab Rahaman urged members of the public not to speculate about the incident or make statements that could interfere with the police investigation.

The circumstances surrounding the disputed videos and the attack remain under investigation.

The incident has raised concerns over the safety of Rohingya refugees and migrants in Malaysia amid the circulation of racially sensitive material on social media.

Police have not said who carried out the attack or confirmed that the online videos were the motive behind it.
