Saudi Arabia expects favourable ICJ verdict in Rohingya genocide case

Saudi Arabia expects a favourable verdict from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Rohingya genocide case and hopes the proceedings will help hold those responsible for genocide accountable, according to a statement from Bangladesh’s Permanent Mission to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The issue was raised during a meeting on Tuesday between Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the OIC, Ambassador MJH Jabed, and newly appointed Saudi Permanent Representative to the OIC, Ambassador Khalid Bin Ismaeel Bin Badawi Bin Hussain Al Sharif.

Saudi Arabia backs Rohingya repatriation and accountability

During the meeting, the Saudi ambassador assured Bangladesh of Riyadh’s continued support for the repatriation of Rohingya refugees, according to the Bangladesh mission’s statement.

He also expressed hope that a favourable ICJ verdict holding those responsible for genocide accountable would establish a historic precedent in international human rights law.

The remarks underscore continued diplomatic attention within the OIC to the Rohingya crisis and international efforts to pursue accountability over alleged atrocities committed against the Rohingya in Myanmar.

The Rohingya have faced decades of persecution and restrictions in Myanmar. Hundreds of thousands fled to neighbouring Bangladesh following the Myanmar military’s 2017 crackdown in Rakhine State.

Bangladesh has consistently called for the safe, voluntary, dignified and sustainable return of Rohingya refugees to their homeland in Myanmar.

Rohingya genocide case before ICJ

The case before the ICJ concerns allegations that Myanmar violated its obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention in its treatment of the Rohingya.

The proceedings have become a significant international legal avenue for addressing allegations of genocide against the Rohingya and examining Myanmar’s responsibilities under international law.

Saudi Arabia’s latest comments, as reported by Bangladesh’s OIC mission, signal Riyadh’s expectation that the judicial process will contribute to accountability for crimes committed against the persecuted community.

Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia discuss upcoming OIC meeting

The two ambassadors also discussed the upcoming 52nd session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM), scheduled to be held in Baghdad.

Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia agreed to coordinate their positions at OIC forums on several areas of common interest, including trade and finance, agriculture, healthcare, science and technology, according to the statement.

Bangladesh expresses solidarity with Saudi Arabia

During the meeting, Jabed expressed Bangladesh’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia following recent Houthi attacks on civilian infrastructure that reportedly killed innocent people, including two Bangladeshi nationals.

The Saudi envoy expressed appreciation for Bangladesh’s support, while the Bangladesh mission’s statement described the attacks as violations of international law.

The meeting highlighted broader cooperation between Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia within the OIC, alongside their discussions on the Rohingya crisis and international accountability.
