More than 152,000 newly arrived Rohingya registered in Bangladesh since late 2024: UNHCR

More than 152,000 Rohingya refugees have newly arrived in Bangladesh since December 2024, driven by escalating violence and persecution in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

In its latest update, UNHCR reported that 152,029 newly arrived Rohingya refugees had been registered in Bangladesh between December 2024 and May 31, 2026.

Of the total, 2,260 refugees were registered during May alone, reflecting the continued flow of Rohingya seeking refuge from ongoing conflict and insecurity in Myanmar.

The agency noted that the number of newly registered arrivals stood at 149,769 in March, indicating a steady increase in refugee arrivals over recent months.

UNHCR said a total of 1,197,411 Rohingya refugees have now been identified across camps in Bangladesh, making it one of the largest refugee populations in the world.

According to the agency, thousands of people have been killed in Myanmar’s Rakhine State since 2024 as a result of targeted violence, armed conflict, and persecution, forcing many Rohingya families to flee across the border in search of safety.

As of May 31, UNHCR had registered 1,045,382 Rohingya refugees who were displaced from Myanmar during previous waves of displacement since 1990 and the mass exodus of 2017.

Among them, 39,737 refugees arrived following earlier episodes of violence after 1990, while 1,005,645 fled to Bangladesh following the military crackdown in Myanmar in 2017.

The report noted that intensified fighting and deteriorating security conditions in Rakhine State have continued to drive new refugee movements into Bangladesh since 2024.

As a result, aid agencies identified a new wave of arrivals in refugee camps toward the end of 2024 and have since been conducting biometric registration and identification processes to document the new arrivals and facilitate humanitarian assistance.

UNHCR highlighted the vulnerability of the refugee population, noting that women and children account for approximately 78 percent of all Rohingya refugees living in the camps.

The agency also reported that around 12 percent of the refugee population consists of people with specific protection needs, including persons with disabilities, single-parent households, individuals with serious medical conditions, unaccompanied and separated children, elderly people at risk, and others requiring legal and physical protection.

Humanitarian organizations have repeatedly warned that the continued influx of refugees is placing additional pressure on already overcrowded camps in Cox’s Bazar, where resources remain stretched after years of hosting nearly 1.2 million Rohingya refugees.

Aid agencies continue to call for increased international support to address growing humanitarian needs and to pursue durable solutions for displaced Rohingya communities affected by ongoing instability in Myanmar.
