Last August 2017, more than 800,000 Rohingya Muslims have crossed the border and fled to Bangladesh due to the military’s clearance opreationin Maungdaw and Buthidaung region, northern Rakhine State. It has been more than five years now.

During this campaign, Rohingya villages were burned down and massacres occurred, and the Gambia filed a lawsuit against Myanmar at the ICJ on behalf of the Rohingya.

State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi herself went to the court in Hague city and protested in the first hearing during the NLD government’s tenure in December 2019 that the ICJ did not have jurisdiction over this case.

After the military coup on February 1, 2021, the National Unity Government (NUG), which is made up of party members and the NLD MPs said they would cancel all these objections and accept the ICJ’s decision regarding Myanmar.
