Nepal tightens border security amid concerns over possible Rohingya influx

Nepal has intensified security measures along its eastern border with India following concerns over the possible entry of Rohingya refugees into the country.

Authorities said the recent political developments in India’s West Bengal state have raised fears of displacement among sections of the Muslim community, particularly Rohingyas, potentially prompting cross-border movement toward Nepal.

Police have placed border districts on “high alert,” especially along the eastern Nepal-India frontier, to prevent unauthorized entry.

According to Morang Superintendent of Police Kabita Katuwal, security agencies have been instructed to conduct mandatory identity checks on individuals deemed suspicious while crossing the border.

“Security personnel have been extensively mobilized to prevent unidentified individuals from entering Nepal under suspicious circumstances,” Katuwal said. “Local authorities have also been directed to remain vigilant and immediately report any activities involving unknown persons.”

Koshi Province Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Binod Ghimire said stricter surveillance and inspection measures have been implemented at checkpoints across all districts of the province.

“Although there is currently no official confirmation regarding the entry of Rohingyas into Nepal, enhanced security measures have been introduced to minimize potential risks,” DIG Ghimire stated.

Authorities continue to monitor the border situation closely as security operations remain in effect.
