At a time when local and foreign forces are talking about finding a solution to the conflict that has erupted since the military coup, people across Burma are increasingly concerned about the military’s killings, torture and ill-treatment. It has been subjected to arbitrary acts such as arrest, torture and arson.
So far, Asean’s efforts to intervene in Burmese politics have not been as successful.
NUG National Unity Government, Foreign Minister Zin Mar Aung said it was “absolutely useless” for Asean to continue to adhere to the military council.
“As the current chairman and Envoy will only do so with the permission of the military council. What ever want for doing is consulting with the military council, and if the military council does not like it, it does not dare to do anything. We are not satisfied with the current chairman. The answer is no. Because of the current situation in Burma. On the other hand, each of the other ASEAN members has not been successful for more than a year. There is a perception that a new approach should be found, as implementation issues are not respected. We welcome innovative thinking.”
In addition, ASEAN needs to work with the United Nations, to address current issues. “We need to cooperate with other countries and organizations, such as Europe,” the Foreign Minister Zin Mar Aung said.
“ Also so many Representatives about Burma. There are also representatives from ASEAN, EU and UN. Now Thailand has re-appointed a representative. To bring these representatives together to find a way to work harder on Burma. In doing so, Asean regional organizations need to work more effectively. “I think the role of the ASEAN chair, in particular, is very important.”

Meanwhile, the coup leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, has called on ethnic armed groups for peace talks to end on May 9. Powerful ethnic groups such as the KIA, KNU and KNPP have already rejected the offer. Aung San Myint, second secretary of the KNPP – Karenni National Progressive Party, told RFA that they would not accept to talks under the 2008 constitution.
“If we really want to resolve the crisis in Burma and move towards real peace, we need to build a federal democratic union in a common sense,” he said. I think all organizations working for common politics should be involved. That is why we did not go to today’s meeting.”
NUG Foreign Minister Zin Mar Aung also criticized the military council leader’s proposal as an old-fashioned way of perpetuating military involvement in Burmese politics.
“It is not for the purpose of seeking a genuine political solution, but for the sake of easing the pressure that you have or forcing it to unravel,” she said. This is the approach we have taken. It is the same now. Groups in the NCA include the government, parliament, Tatmadaw EAOs Political parties Only after the coup d’etat did these groups become imperfect. It is by no means an honest invitation to meet like this in the face of military pressure. Experienced ethnic rebel groups see this clearly. It is clear that even the organizations that have now accepted the visit are not in good faith. This invitation is also for peace and stability in Burma. There will be no real solution to political problems.”

Coup leader Sr. Gen. Min Aung Hlaing wants peace. He said he would meet with ethnic leaders in person, but all the powerful ethnic rebel groups, who face daily atrocities by the military, have said they do not trust the offer.
