Türkiye reaffirms commitment to Rohingya crisis, calls for lasting solution during Bangladesh visit

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to seeking a lasting and just solution to the Rohingya crisis, pledging continued humanitarian support while working with regional partners and international organizations to keep the issue on the global agenda.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Dhaka on Friday following bilateral talks with Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, Fidan said Türkiye remains actively engaged in efforts aimed at resolving one of the world’s most protracted humanitarian crises.

“We are acting in solidarity and coordination with neighboring countries and relevant organizations to achieve a permanent and just solution to the Rohingya issue,” Fidan said. “Türkiye is also making intensive efforts to ensure that this crisis remains on the agenda of the international community.”

Praise for Bangladesh’s Humanitarian Role

Fidan commended Bangladesh for hosting more than one million Rohingya refugees who fled violence and persecution in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, describing the country’s contribution as a historic humanitarian sacrifice.

“The tragedy endured by the Rohingya Muslims unfortunately continues,” he said. “Bangladesh, which has hosted more than one million Rohingya refugees for years, has demonstrated a historic sacrifice on behalf of all humanity.”

The Turkish foreign minister is scheduled to visit Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, where he will review humanitarian assistance programs implemented by Turkish agencies, including the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the Turkish Red Crescent, and the Turkish Diyanet Foundation.

Fidan also announced plans to visit a Turkish-operated field hospital serving refugees in the camp areas.

“We will continue our humanitarian assistance to improve the living conditions of the Rohingya people while supporting their safe, dignified, and voluntary return to their homeland,” he said.

Expanding Türkiye-Bangladesh Cooperation

Beyond the Rohingya issue, Fidan highlighted growing cooperation between Türkiye and Bangladesh across political, economic, and cultural sectors.

He congratulated Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman on his election as President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, describing the achievement as a reflection of Bangladesh’s increasing international influence.

According to Fidan, both countries are working to strengthen their longstanding partnership and expand bilateral cooperation on a broader scale.

“We continue our efforts to deepen our longstanding partnership across a wide spectrum and elevate it to a stronger and more visionary level on solid foundations,” he said.

The two sides also discussed increasing bilateral trade from the current volume of approximately $1.3 billion to $2 billion.

During the visit, Türkiye and Bangladesh signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the protection of cultural heritage and historical assets.

“I hope this agreement, which reflects our shared determination to protect humanity’s common heritage, will benefit both countries,” Fidan added.

Regional Stability and Global Challenges

Addressing regional security issues, Fidan stressed that maintaining stability, peace, and prosperity remains a central pillar of Turkish foreign policy.

He expressed concern over growing tensions in the Middle East, particularly developments involving Iran, Israel, and ongoing conflicts across the region.

Fidan welcomed diplomatic talks between Iran and the United States, expressing hope that negotiations would contribute to long-term regional stability.

“We hope these discussions will produce concrete results and create the foundations for lasting peace,” he said.

The Turkish minister also underscored the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, warning that instability could have significant implications for global trade, energy security, and international markets.

On the conflict in Gaza, Fidan criticized Israel’s military actions and reiterated Türkiye’s support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“The priority for the international community should be stopping the violence and restoring peace in the region,” he said.

Bangladesh Welcomes Continued Turkish Support

Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman thanked Türkiye for its longstanding support and described Ankara as one of Bangladesh’s important strategic partners.

Rahman expressed appreciation for Türkiye’s backing of Bangladesh’s successful bid for the presidency of the UN General Assembly and praised the close diplomatic relations between the two countries.

He also encouraged Turkish businesses to explore investment opportunities in Bangladesh, particularly within the country’s special economic zones.

Regarding the Rohingya crisis, Rahman described the issue as one of Bangladesh’s most pressing humanitarian and diplomatic challenges.

“The Rohingya crisis remains a major concern for Bangladesh and the international community,” he said, stressing the need to maintain global attention on the situation.

Rahman praised Türkiye’s continued humanitarian and diplomatic support for Rohingya refugees since the onset of the displacement crisis and welcomed Ankara’s ongoing involvement in international efforts aimed at finding a sustainable solution.

He also highlighted the contribution of Turkish medical facilities operating in Rohingya camps and thanked Türkiye for its continued assistance to displaced communities.
