Consider a more effective arms embargo on the Burmese military

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing before on Wednesday, is considering making the arms embargo more effective on the Myanmar military, said James O’Brien, head of the U.S. State Department’s Sanctions Cooperation Division.

It has been more than a year and a half since the military coup and violent crackdown in Myanmar, and the activists are asking the US government to prevent the military council from getting more US dollars to buy weapons, as well as the US congressmen.

“More than 200 organizations around the world called on the United Nations Security Council in May to issue a global arms embargo against Myanmar. In the May meeting of the foreign ministers of the 7 G7 industrial summit countries decided to continue the ban without providing support on sale of ammunition and other military equipment, transfer and technical cooperation.”
