The former US ambassador urge internationally to support the NUG and the forces

On August 3, at a discussion held by the Asia Society Policy Institute’s, they discussed how the international community should respond to the deteriorating situation in Myanmar.

The countries of the world have an attitude of sympathy for the forces who are fighting the revolution against the Military Council and the National Unity Government, but they have not yet reached the level of providing active aid, said Mr. Scott Marcial, the former US ambassador to Myanmar.

“The American government has a really sympathetic attitude towards the National Unity Government (NUG). But at present, NUG does not have effective force power. It is hard to imagine how it will work with NUG. Also, among the forces are rebelling against the military council, different communities, various organizations involved, there is doubt as to whether they will all be able to unite. That’s why many countries are still at the stage of being cautious about the Myanmar issue. At present, I believe all of the world, except China, India and Russia, are too worried and reluctant to get involved in the Myanmar issue. But right now, the military council is still oppressing and killing the people. Going forward, there is a possibility that this will continue. In this situation, some countries continue to sell weapons to the military council, but the countries that support the NUG only give verbal support. Frankly speaking, the goal of all of us right now should be to help the Myanmar people to win. After that, we will have to decide what kind of policy to apply in relation to Myanmar.”

Burmese Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun called on the international community to end all diplomatic relations with the Military Council in order to end the military dictatorship and achieve democracy in Myanmar, to cut off the military’s sources of income, the ASEAN to increase the interventions, the UN Security Council to respond to the Myanmar issue as soon as possible. The international community demanded six points to support the Burmese people financially and to recognize the National Unity Government (NUG) as the legitimate government of Myanmar.

In addition, Mr. Scott Marcial said that when it comes to the Myanmar issue, the international community is thinking of ASEAN as the center and urging the military council to follow and implement the common agreements reached with ASEAN is no longer working.

“I would like to say that we should stop calling for the implementation of the five common agreements of ASEAN. These common agreements have long ceased to work. ASEAN’s intentions are good. But it never worked. As long as we talk about implementing these five common agreements, It creates the illusion that there is already a practical way to solve the Myanmar crisis. The truth is not yet. The five points of common agreement are not a practical approach. American leaders from Washington DC I hope that all ASEAN and international leaders will accept that the way they try to solve with these five common agreements is not working and find a new way.”

Currently, when it comes to the Myanmar issue, the ASEAN countries are divided into two sides, and the military leader, General Min Aung Hlaing, is not a person who will accept anyone’s arguments, including ASEAN leaders. ASEAN has maintained its decision not to allow military leaders to attend high-level meetings. If possible, Mr. Marcial said it is necessary to think about the method of suspending Myanmar’s membership in ASEAN and to rethink the way ASEAN tries to solve the problem with a five-point common agreement.

Although there may not be a single solution to the current crisis in Myanmar, put as much pressure on the military leaders as possible, On the other hand, Mr. Scott Marcial suggested that they think about ways to support the NUG and the revolutionary forces, including financial support.

“With international financial support, the NUG and the revolutionary forces will be able to work more effectively. There will be more military personnel who will leave the army and come to join. On the ground, education and teaching activities will be able to be done effectively. That way, words and deeds will match.”

The Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen himself said Myanmar’s politics, economic and humanitarian aid situation is affecting worsed and the unity of the entire ASEAN and the stability of the region, said Myanmar Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun said at the ASEAN meeting held in Cambodia yesterday.
