2,950 Rohingya refugees to reach Bhasan Char

Another batch of 2,950 Rohingyas will reach Bhasan Char Island on March 10, officials have said.

A total of 27 buses carrying the Rohingyas left for Chittagong from the Ukhiya refugee camp on Wednesday afternoon.

Additional Refugee, Relief and Rehabilitation Commissioner Md Shamsuzzaman Nayan told reporters that the refugees were expected to reach the island on Thursday afternoon.

On February 16, another 1,654 Rohingyas were relocated to Bhasan Char.

So far, around 22,000 Rohingyas have been relocated to the island in 11 phases, sources at the office of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner said.

Bangladesh plans to relocate 100,000 Rohingyas to Bhasan Char in phases, in the face of growing concerns over the extreme congestion in Cox’s Bazar camps and to avert any untoward incident. It has also been campaigning to ensure quick repatriation of the refugees.

The country is currently hosting more than 1.1 million Rohingyas. The majority of them came to Bangladesh in August 2017, fleeing persecution in their homeland of Rakhine state in Myanmar.

Habib, a teacher, living in camp 7 explained about Bhasan Char. It is a flooding Island as Bangladesh experts said and it need to more time for inhabiting around 20 years, but the Bangladesh government settle Rohingya there now which may be risk for these people.

“I am not against Bangladesh for relocating Rohingya to Bhasan Char, the government is trying to keep safety of Rohingya in Cox’s Bazar refugee camp as it is congested where inhuman activity occurred frequently. But, for this reason, can’t push people in danger. Lobbying and organizing people to go risky Island is against the refugee will. In Bangladesh, there are so many places like us, living in overcrowded places on the land, why the government sending us to Waterland.”

UNHCR only develop in the flooding Island is giving facility as farm cultivation, animal breeding and fishing inside the Island, not develop our skill in the Island. Our children life is in danger living on the Island.

We have been trying our best, with the support of the international community, to ensure safety and wellbeing of the Rohingya. We developed an island called Bhasan Char with proper amenities, spending about $350 million from our own resources to de-risk and decongest the squalid camps in Cox’s Bazar, according to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with the Khaleej Times for an interview.

Bangladesh is not in a position to shoulder the enormous burden for an indefinite period. The ultimate solution to the problem lies in the sustainable repatriation of the Rohingya, she more said.
