PM Hasina speaks to VoA Bangla on Rohingya crisis and Bangladesh’s stance

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave an interview to Voice of America Bangla where she spoke in details about the Rohingya crisis and Bangladesh’s stance on the matter.

The PM said that countries that had come forward to extend humanitarian assistance to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh are now themselves facing financial crisis following the Russia-Ukraine war.

“Due to the Russia-Ukraine war, all countries are in serious economic trouble. The countries which came forward and extended their support to Bangladesh are now themselves facing crisis. How much more can we do? How much more will we provide?” she said during an interview with Voice of America.

The prime minister said many Rohingyas are involved in drug trafficking, arms trafficking and human trafficking in the camps and are also involved in conflict among themselves.

The PM also said children are growing in the camps day by day and all kinds of facilities including education and treatment are provided to them but it is difficult to give them a conducive environment for healthy growth. As such it is not possible to allow any more Rohingyas into Bangladesh and everyone has to think about it.

Not just shelter, it is a big responsibility to manage food, treatment and everything else for them, the PM said.

“Due to Russia-Ukraine war and sanctions, the price of daily commodities and inflation has increased across the globe including Bangladesh. So how can we manage so many Rohingya refugees?”
