ICRC urges to investigate prison violence

At the end of March, 18 civil society groups called on the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to go to prisons to investigate the coup d’état.

The detainees were subjected to inhumane torture and sexual assault in prison, citing prosecutors and those released from prison.

The ICRC has issued a statement calling for a visit to the prisons, which includes anti-military boycott committees led by the National Unity Government (NUG) Ministry of Women and Youth Affairs.

A member of the Mandalay Gender Equality Union, who was among those arrested, said:

The All Burma Students’ Union (ABSU) said in January that Myat Thu, one of the arrested Mandalay strike leaders, had been sexually harassed during interrogation until he was stabbed to death.

Most of those arrested after the coup and released on amnesty are also being interrogated. The media reported that he was tortured in prison.
