A Rohingya man was killed in a camp in Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhiya upazila yesterday.

The deceased Jafar (35) was a volunteer guard in front of the entrance of camp-18, said Md Faruk Ahmed, assistant superintendent of police (ASP) of APBN-8 (Armed Police Battalion), also the in-charge of the camp.

The incident took place around 3:30am. Around 20-25 miscreants entered H/51 block of the camp and shot two rounds of bullets at Jafar. They later stabbed him indiscriminately to ensure death, the police official added.

On information, police reached the spot and recovered the body of Jafar who died on spot.

Surveillance was increased in the camp following the incident. Police was working to identify and arrest those involved, the ASP added.

The body was sent to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital for autopsy, said Sheikh Mohammad Ali, officer-in-charge of Ukhiya Police Station.

Three Rohingya volunteer guards and two leaders known as majhis, have been killed in similar manners in the camps during the last three months.

Another Rohingya man was hacked to death by unidentified assailants less than a day after a volunteer was killed in a similar manner at the Ukhiya camp in Cox’s Bazar.

The deceased, identified as Ershad, a resident of Extension camp-4 H of Kutupalong camp, was killed early on Thursday.

Masud Anwar, additional superintendent of police of the Armed Police Battalion (APBN) confirmed the matter to The Dhaka Tribune.

He said that police were trying to identify the assailants and efforts were underway to arrest them.

Police and volunteers are of the view that the murders are part of a ploy to deter volunteers from taking up guarding duties at night.

Ershad is the sixth victim of such an attack in the last three months.
